Understanding
Suicide

Suicide is a serious public health concern that affects people of all ages, backgrounds, and walks of life. It is not a weakness — it often stems from overwhelming emotional pain and untreated mental health conditions.

703K
People die by suicide globally every year — making it a leading cause of death worldwide. (WHO, 2023)

In Malaysia, suicide rates have been rising, particularly among youth aged 15–30. Awareness and early intervention can save lives.

✗ Myth

"People who talk about suicide are just seeking attention."

✓ Fact

Most people who die by suicide gave clear warning signs beforehand. Always take such talk seriously.

✗ Myth

"Asking about suicide plants the idea."

✓ Fact

Research shows that asking directly about suicidal thoughts does NOT increase risk — it can open the door to help.

Risk factors include:

"Every 40 seconds, someone in the world dies by suicide. Yet most suicides are preventable with timely care and support."

3
Stay present: Don't leave them alone. Remove access to means if possible.
